Like most of the other suggestions made so far, just some basic tools will get you pretty far. I personally find that the following is a good starting place, and I keep all of these in an emergency tool kit in the trunk: 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21 mm sockets a couple appropriate ratchets, a 1/2 breaker bar, a few sizes of screwdrivers (flat and phillips), some pliers, some needle-nose pliers, set of metric wrenches, some fuses, some electrical wire, electrical crimp-connectors, wire-stripper/crimping tool, flashlight, glovs, and a towel. Also, things like a low-profile hydraulic jack, jackstands, PB Blaster, torque wrench, factory service manual, tt.net, and some beer for "mission accomplished" are nice to have around when you are working in the garage at home.
